Picture frame
Picture frames are crafted primarily from cherry wood, tailored to each artwork.This craft draws from the lineage of joinery as a traditional woodworking technique, with artisans in the workshop specializing in either “wood preparation” or “finishing” to complete the piece.
About the Craftsman
During my university days, my hobby of appreciating modern paintings sparked an interest in picture frames. Utilizing the Arakawa Craftsman Training Program, I apprenticed at Fuji Seigaku, run by Mr. Kazushi Yoshida, from January 2011 to March 2017, mastering the techniques of frame finishing. I currently work as a craftsman at the same workshop.At Fuji Seigaku, they meticulously frame each piece individually to suit various works (Japanese paintings, Western paintings, prints, calligraphy, photographs, three-dimensional objects, fabric scraps, clothing, ceramics, etc.), while also producing frames in standard sizes.
While primarily responsible for finishing processes like base coating and foil stamping, Mr. Kurihara also leverages his framing expertise to design diverse products such as business card holders, engaging in multifaceted product development.
