Forging
The technique of shaping metal sheets such as copper and silver by hammering, stretching, and drawing them with wooden or metal hammers to create vessels and decorative items.Introduced during the Yayoi period, it was used in ancient times for horse tack, ornaments, and Buddhist altar fittings. During the Edo period, “silversmiths” (shirogane-shi) flourished, crafting silverware for feudal lords. In modern times, flower vases and other items were exported to Western countries. Today, it produces tea utensils, tableware, and decorative items.
