Picture frame

Picture frames are crafted primarily from cherry wood, tailored to each artwork.
This craft draws from the lineage of joinery as a traditional woodworking technique, with artisans in the workshop specializing in either “wood preparation” or “finishing” to complete the piece.

About the Craftsman

Mr. Yoshida trained in frame making, specializing in the “assembly” process, at Nagoya’s long-established shop, Sankakudo.
After his apprenticeship, he studied under his father, Yoshiji Yoshida (formerly a holder of a ward-designated intangible cultural property), and took over the workshop. His father trained at a lacquerware workshop in Nezu before establishing his own business.
Mr. Yoshida designs frames tailored to specific works—such as Western paintings, Japanese paintings, and woodblock prints—primarily using materials like cherry wood based on customer orders, overseeing their assembly in the workshop. At Fuji Seigaku, each piece is meticulously framed individually to suit various works (Japanese paintings, Western paintings, prints, calligraphy, photographs, three-dimensional objects, fabric scraps, clothing, ceramics, etc.), while also producing frames in standard sizes.
Furthermore, utilizing the Arakawa Craftsman Development Program, the workshop is committed to passing down frame-making techniques to the next generation. Many graduates of the program, including Daichi Kurihara, now work as craftsmen alongside Mr. Yoshida at Fuji Seigaku.
