Hand-painted Yuzen
One of the patterned dyeing techniques developed during the Edo period. It is said to have originated from fan paintings created by Miyazaki Yuzen-sai of Kyoto in the mid-Edo period.Characterized by hand-painting, it employs tube-drawing and toothpick paste resist dyeing to apply partial coloring. In Edo, influenced by samurai and merchant cultures, it developed subdued, calm color tones and simple compositions.
About the Craftsman
At age 23, he studied under Harutaka Uchiyama, a master of wireless yuzen dyeing, mastering the technique. He later received instruction from Yu Hayasaka, a former Tokyo Metropolitan Traditional Craftsman, and mastered the thread-dyed yuzen technique.Mr. Kasahara handles everything from design to finishing entirely in-house.
He creates not only kimonos and obi sashes but also interior pieces, miscellaneous goods, and ties. His painted patterns center on flowers, with cherry blossoms being his specialty. Many of his works are realistic pieces utilizing his muren yuzen techniques.
Achievements
- 1995: Received the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Youth Division Award for Outstanding Skills
- Designated as an Arakawa Ward Registered Intangible Cultural Property Holder for Fiscal Year 2015
