Lacquerware

Lacquerware refers to the craft of coating and decorating the surfaces of objects with lacquer, as well as the resulting crafts.
In Japan, containers coated with red lacquer were already in use during the Jōmon period, indicating that this is a technique with a long history. Since ancient times, lacquer has been used in the production of Buddhist statues, religious artifacts, furnishings, armor, and architecture, leading to the development of a wide variety of techniques. During the Edo period, Edo lacquerware—highly practical and designed for daily use with an emphasis on durability—came into prominence.

Lacquer is a natural material known for its antibacterial and preservative properties. Not only has lacquerware been deeply ingrained in Japanese daily life, but it is also highly regarded internationally as one of Japan’s representative crafts.
