Forging

The technique of shaping metal sheets such as copper and silver by hammering, stretching, and drawing them with wooden or metal hammers to create vessels and decorative items.
Introduced during the Yayoi period, it was used in ancient times for horse tack, ornaments, and Buddhist altar fittings. During the Edo period, “silversmiths” (shirogane-shi) flourished, crafting silverware for feudal lords. In modern times, flower vases and other items were exported to Western countries. Today, it produces tea utensils, tableware, and decorative items.

About the Craftsman

The third-generation master, who learned the craft under his grandfather, Kinjiro (deceased, former holder of Arakawa Ward’s Designated Intangible Cultural Property) and his father, Takehisa (deceased, holder of Arakawa Ward’s Registered Intangible Cultural Property). His grandfather studied under Kiko Adachi, a disciple of Yasubei Nishimura in Kyoto, before moving to Tokyo and establishing his workshop at the current location. After graduating from the Metalworking Department of Tokyo Metropolitan Technical High School, his father began assisting Kanjiro in his work.
Rikyu worked in another field for about two years after graduating high school before beginning his apprenticeship under his grandfather and father, mastering the craft.
He primarily creates tea utensils (teapots, kettles, tea caddies, etc.), as well as confectionery dishes and sake vessels. While he maintains the skill to produce items from a single sheet of metal, teapots are produced in large quantities, so some processes are outsourced to subcontractors.
His teapots and kettles feature delicate refinements, such as the subtle angle of the spout that prevents spills, making them highly popular. He also repairs products.
Furthermore, he is actively involved in nurturing successors through the Arakawa Craftsman Development Project.
